A chat with Italian DJ/producer, HouseHeadz00

Simone Mascali, aka Steal Tapes, was born in 1998 in a small town between Milan and Varese. From a very young age he fell in love with music, with a distinct preference for hip hop and electronic music, which he loved to dance to. He started producing at the age of 13 and has never stopped, collecting numerous charts and support from worldwide DJs. His sound is constantly evolving, but always characterized by attention to detail and fresh, cutting-edge sounds.

Recently, with his alias HouseHeadz00, he launched the vinyl-only label 'HouseHeadz Records' which is already collecting support from DJ’s around the world. Off the back of the second instalment of the series we talk to the talented Italian producer about the release, his sound and journey so far…

Hey Simone. Great to meet you! What's happening in your world at the minute?

Hey, great to meet you too! Right now, I’m focused on finishing up my latest projects, including a new EP. I’m also experimenting with different sounds and preparing for some upcoming shows, so it’s an exciting time!

Can you enlighten us on the meaning of your ‘Househeadz00’ artist name?

'Househeadz00' came from the idea of sharing house records, especially from the early 2000s, with other house heads. Over time, it evolved into a side project where I release only house music on vinyl. It’s a way to celebrate the roots of the genre while keeping that classic vinyl culture alive.

Congratulations on releasing 'HouseHeadz00 Series: Black'. Talk us through the release, what is the Inspiration behind it?

Thank you! *HouseHeadz00 Series: Black* is the second release in the series, and the inspiration came from my desire to explore the different shades of house music. I wanted each track to represent a unique vibe, starting with something energetic, then moving into tech, deep, and soulful sounds. The goal was to create a journey through house music’s many layers, blending my influences from both classic and modern styles.

For those who are just discovering your music, what do you hope they feel or experience when they listen to one of your sets or productions?

For those discovering my music, I hope they feel a connection to the energy and soul of the music. Whether it’s one of my sets or a production, I want them to experience a journey, something that moves them emotionally and physically. My goal is to create a unique atmosphere that stays with them long after the music ends.

Can you describe the connection between your music and your Italian roots, and how they continue to influence your music today?‍

There’s definitely a strong connection between my music and my Italian roots. Growing up in Italy, I was surrounded by a rich musical culture that blends passion, rhythm, and melody, which has naturally influenced my sound. One Italian song that has inspired me deeply is Yes I Know My Way by the great Pino Daniele.

Can you share some insight into your creative process when producing music? Do you have any particular rituals or methods that help you stay inspired?‍

When I make music, mental freedom is essential. I need to feel calm and have no specific ideas when I enter the studio, I just close my eyes and let myself be carried by the moment. I never start with a concept, instead, I try to follow my flow.

Usually, I begin with the rhythm section and then build the rest of the track around it.

My greatest inspiration comes after I return from my travels, which is another passion of mine. It’s especially strong when I bring back objects or art from the places I’ve visited into the studio. These help me capture the vibe of those experiences and infuse them into my music.

As someone deeply rooted in the house & disco scene, what state is it in right now? What notable artists are emerging?

I think it's a great moment for the house & disco scene right now. There's space for everything, and DJs have the freedom to fully express themselves. A perfect example is Kirollus, who brings his own unique sound different from what you typically hear on the big stages and gets a great response from the crowd. I also really like the guys from Make A Dance,  they’re pushing their own vision of house music, and they've been a big source of inspiration for me lately.

When you are not busy with music, what might we find you doing?

I love to travel, which is a big part of my life. Also I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. They are a major source of inspiration and support for me, and being with them is always a way to recharge.

I’m also a big fan of AC Milan, and I’m often at the stadium, whenever possible I also follow their away matches.

What do you have coming up in the next few months? Feel free to mention anything!

On September 28th, I’ll be performing for the friends of Pizza Club at Arca, one of the most beautiful venues in Milan, in my opinion. I’m also working on new music for my main project Steal Tapes  which will be released on my other label Mine Is Yours Records. Additionally, we’re planning to take the ‘HouseHeadz’ parties on the road across Europe, but I’ll share more details about that soon.

I’m excited to continue my residency with This Is Not party, where I released my latest EP ‘The Cut’. I’m proud to be part of this family because I’ve grown a lot thanks to them and attending their events as a ‘young clubber’ has introduced me to a lot of different sheds of music growing my culture.

Finally, tell us about 3 about three of your best dancefloor fillers…

Here are three of my best dancefloor fillers:

No Hype DJ's (DJ Stenn & DJ Stanic) - 'Move Da Party’

This track has a lot of groove and energy. Every time I play it, it gets everyone on the dancefloor moving.

Allen Saei - 'Pleased to Meet You’

This track is especially effective when the lights go down at outdoor parties. It creates a great atmosphere as the night progresses.

Harry Choo Cho Romero - 'Tania’

One of my all-time favorites, I love playing this track during the day and at outdoor events. It brings incredible vibes to the dancefloor.

Thank you so much for the interview. I appreciate the opportunity to share more about my music and upcoming projects.
