A chat with Rob Redford

'Primitive Electronic Rhythms' is new on Boogie Cafe, London-based producer Rob Redford delivers an evocative deep-house EP steeped in analog warmth and soulful heritage. Across four meticulously crafted tracks, he channels the spirit of underground house legends while forging his own sonic identity.

Redford’s latest work resonates with the legacy of Glenn Underground, Ron Trent, and the Prescription Records sound, blending spiritual grooves, textured synth work, and hypnotic percussion into a sound both timeless and fresh.

If you’re into a deep, analog-fueled house that nods to the roots while sounding uplifting and new, this EP is well worth your attention.

Off the back of his latest drop we had the pleasure of sitting down with rob for a chat about the release, his musical environment growing up, career highlights, favourite records plus more…

Hey Rob, great to meet you! What's happening in your world at the minute?

Hi! I'm currently working on new material and exploring the electronic underground, when I'm not at my day job ( YAWN ) .

Congratulations on releasing ‘Primitive Electronic Rhythms’ on Boogie Cafe. Can you tell us a bit about the EP?

Primitive Electronic Rhythms is 4 tracks created using Only 4 pieces of hardware, a drum machine, an MPC and 2 synths.

How did the collaboration with the label come about?

My connection to Boogie Cafe came about a couple of years ago, Alex approached me and asked if I'd like to work with the label, and the 614 Ep was born!

Where did you grow up and how did your environment shape your relationship with music?

I was born in South London, and moved to the Medway Towns in Kent at an early age which is where I grew up. At school, cassette tapes of hardcore/ jungle and Drum and Bass would circulate, rigging up makeshift aerials so I could pick up pirate radio stations which would eventually lead to me finding an early Kiss FM on the dial, where I discovered the likes of Paul Trouble Anderson and Colin Dale, Tuff Jam etc…

What's your go to piece of studio gear or plug in?

If I can only pick one, it's my Roland TR8-S Drum Machine, it has the authentic sounds from all the classic Roland machines of the past and more...

As someone deeply rooted in the electronic scene, what state is it in right now? What notable artists are emerging?

The electronic scene is in great shape in my opinion. Artists like Life Recorder, Aleqs Notal, Marvin Jupiter, Chaos in the CBD, Kyle Hall are just a few of the artists who I follow closely…

What's been the highlight of your career so far?

There's been a few highlights of late, including working with one of my deep house heroes and good friend Craig Smith on his Beyond Tomorrow label who he runs with another good friend Adrian Milarski .

Another highlight was having my first vinyl release with Max Sinal's label Soul Quest.

Not forgetting Sy Sez , my bro from way back in the pirate radio days who gave me my first break with a remix for his label Raising Records. It was this break that gave me the confidence to shape my own sound. And just get stuff out there!

When you think back to your earliest projects, what’s something you would do differently now?

Absolutely nothing, it's what's shaped my journey so far.

Which 3 records never leave your bag?

Boobjazz - Midnight Ceremony (Lars Bartkhun)

Ron Trent - You'll Never Find

Soul Renegades - Thank You / Oh Yeah

When you are not busy with music, what might we find you doing?

Making excuses not to do other stuff so I can make music.

Finally, what do you have coming up in the next few months? Feel free to mention anything!

I'm currently working on new material for Beyond Tomorrow, TotheRock records, Jimpster's sub label- Cyphon, Soul Quest records. I’m also going to be working on more projects with my London Sonics partner Ian Dadds and putting together more original material for my own brand X-TRAX

You can catch me playing some music at the Boogie Cafe boat Party on 21st September down in Bristol with Alex, Sean McCabe and Sarah Sweeney…

And currently looking at another X-TRAX event with my partners Ian Dadds and Ted Lawrence…
