Delving deep into Kousto's Inspirations
28 November 2024 marks the release of “Forza Bruta”, the new single by acclaimed electronic music producer, Kousto.
Known for crafting immersive soundscapes that transport listeners to summer along the coast of the South of France, Kousto’s latest track doesn’t fail to disappoint. Expect waves of nostalgia and raw, unfiltered energy that invite audiences to reconnect with memories of hazy days and parties that vividly live through the tapestry of time.
“Forza Bruta” is Italian for "Brute Force". The title encapsulates the track's central theme of strength and the relentless impact of memory shaping our very existence.
Deep beats and a pulsing bassline embody the spirit of “Forza Bruta” which balances summer’s warmth with an unyielding intensity that creates an experience both uplifting and evocative.
“‘Forza Bruta’ first came to me while travelling in Corsica. Later, when I was back in London I brought it into the studio and worked to incorporate a variety of analogue sounds, including a bass guitar, drums, percussion and synthesisers, as well as dreamy vocals that enhance the soundscape, and provide those wistful tones synonymous with halcyon days. For me, music is all about evoking nostalgia, and this track does just that,” explains Kousto.
With a deep knowledge of music spanning many genres we thought it’d be a good idea to sit down with Kousto to discuss some records that he finds inspiring. This is how it went down…
Antoine Bourachot - Somebody
Antoine Bourachot’s Somebody captures the forward momentum I’m after. His take on French Touch blends elegance with boldness, especially through his drum work and unexpected twists. It’s both sophisticated and club-ready, with a sense of unpredictability that inspires me. I’m aiming for a similar balance in my own sound—music that’s both thought-provoking and danceable.
Enio Morricone - Metti, una sera a cena
I feel a deep connection to the timeless emotion and craftsmanship in tracks like Morricone’s Metti, una sera a cena. It’s a masterclass in creating cinematic, evocative soundscapes—warm, intimate, and iconic. This track speaks to my love for 1960s Italian easy listening, a genre that blends elegance with emotional depth. Morricone’s ability to craft nostalgic yet fresh music inspires me to bring that same warmth and timelessness into my own work.
Wallace - Cynical Dingo
This track is an absolute banger—it's got that perfect blend of Brazilian vibes mixed with house music that hits just right. Every time I dropped it, the energy in the crowd would skyrocket. There’s something about the rhythm and infectious groove that really gets people moving.
Jack J – Something (On My Mind)
When I was 19 and living in Montreal, I came across one of the first house tracks that really resonated with me, even though I wasn’t particularly into house music at the time. It was “Something (On My Mind)” by Jack J. What struck me about it was its melancholic and soft vibe, which had a big impact on my own music production. That emotional quality, combined with its soothing energy, reminds me of the sea—a sense of vastness and introspection.
Gaussian Curve - Impossible Island
It’s hard to find a track more laid-back than this. It captures the essence of Balearic music for me—perfectly representing the sea and the sun. The tune is so relaxing, like the gentle rhythm of the tide. The melody flows effortlessly, creating a sense of calm that transports you to a peaceful, sun-soaked place. It’s the kind of track that invites you to unwind, let go, and just be present.
