Ed Temple discusses cosmic house & disco...
Australian-based artist Ed Temple releases yet another magical blend of live disco vibes with modern house production. If his last release “Who You Are” was for your late-night affairs, then this release “Pink Velvet” is the Ying to its Yang and is very much for your daytime delights.
Featuring a full string and brass section across the EP, along with other live instruments bringing the record to life and as always heavily laden with classic drum machines and synthesizers from Ed’s hardware filled studio, laying down the groove and vibes.
Inkswel jumps on REMIX duties this time, with guest vocalists LYMA and Elf Tranzporter. While Luke Million sprinkles his HiFi disco dust across the final mix down of the EP.
Following on from our premiere of ‘Pink Velvet’ we sat down with the otherworldly Aussie to to discuss out of this world tracks that when he heard them took him to an intergalactic place. In the order in which they were released…
1977
Galaxy reflects themes of unity, peace, and a desire for harmony among people, blending these ideals with interstellar metaphors. This track always takes the dance floor to other dimensions when played at the right time too.
1979
Just imagining the title Dancing In Outer Space takes you out of this world and moving in the cosmos. This is maybe an obvious one for the theme, but the first time I heard this track I fell in love with it and it stayed in my record bag for about 2 years and I’d play it any and every time that I could get away with it.
1979
Sticking with the song’s with space names… Space Bass is just an awesome track and I had to add it to this list. The production on this one is amazing, all of the orchestral arrangement just blows my mind, beautiful choruses, along with all the spacey synth sounds, winner winner chicken dinner!!
1998
Okay so here, I’m definitely breaking the rules of “cosmic disco” - but Jeff Mills. I’m certain he’s not human; his music is without question communicating on a frequency we don’t comprehend just yet. I’m even sure ages ago I watched an interview where he was discussing being from another planet (or something wild). If anyone knows the interview I’m talking about please send it to me on Insta, I was trying to tell a mate about it the other day and couldn’t find it.
2001
So pulling back slightly to the theme here. This as far as I know is Daniel Wang’s only release under this moniker (Light Fantastic) and boy do I wish there was more. This is one of my favorite tracks of all time, I just love its movement and journey.
2005
I don’t think there could be a cosmic disko list and Linstrøm’s name not be on it or in fact any of one of the Nords that are doing it. However instead of choosing his most obvious track (which did have a profound impact on me when I first heard it) I feel Space for this list. I’ve chosen one of my favorite Linstrøm tracks Paaskelyd. This track also used to be perfect for when I smoked and needed a long one to play so I could sneak out for a quick lung dart when you could no longer smoke inside venues across Australia
2007
Local legends from my home town - The Swiss. Luke Godson AKA Luke Million who mixed my most recent record and my last record, played keys in this group and is an absolute genius along with equally genius band mates Tony Mitolo and Surahn Sidhu. I have super fond memories of watching these guys play across Adelaide. The track I chose says it’s the Brennan Green Edit, but I think this is the original, as it goes into that Pink Floyd territory in the middle, which I just love and think is a super nice nod from the boys for a cosmic disco track.
2009
Back to breaking the rules again with this one… But boi ohhhh boi, I first heard this at a little club in Adelaide that is no longer around. It was called Mile High, for anyone that knows it, it was when it was still upstairs with luggage hanging from the ceiling. I heard this and just thought, this music can not be from this earth. I’ve heard interviews with all the early techno pioneers, where they talk about hearing Kraftwerk on the radio for the first time and their minds being blown, well I feel like this was that moment for me.
2012
One of (if not) the greatest to swim in the “cosmic” pond. I could put a million of his tracks, mixes or remixes here, but I love this one. It’s subtleness, just enough and not too much of anything, it rolls, you feel it deep within - fail we may, sail we must (salute), you’re a constant inspiration.
2014
I don’t know if anyone has “nailed” the genre to me more than this track by The Juan Maclean. Since its release, whenever anyone mentions Space/Cosmic Disco I think of this track immediately (and the aforementioned I feel space). I wonder if John (Juan) would love or hate that…?
