MOONEE's mini guide to Marseille

Groovence Founder Moonee returns to Groovence with his latest sonic ritual, Ghosts Of Massilia—a five-track EP that channels the echoes of Marseille’s hidden past into a spectral, deeply emotive electronic odyssey.

Steeped in folklore and infused with an otherworldly energy, this release feels less like a collection of tracks and more like an invitation to a séance where synths whisper forgotten stories and rhythms pulse like distant waves against ancient shores. Haunting textures and ethereal harmonies weave through hypnotic grooves, blurring the line between reality and the echoes of the unseen.

With Ghosts Of Massilia, Moonee ventures into uncharted sonic territory, offering a distinct departure from the sun-soaked, percussive house explorations of his past.

Following last year’s SandQuest LP on Oath Istanbul, this EP taps into a deeper, more cinematic narrative—where the city’s phantom voices resonate through fog-drenched basslines and spectral melodies guide the listener through a dance between the living and the lost.

Here at nightclubber.ro we thought it would be a good idea to chat to Moonee about a few of his favourite spots in Marseille, Here’s how it went down…

‘I’ve been living in Marseille for two and a half years now, and the city keeps surprising me. It impresses me, challenges me, inspires me. There’s a deep creative energy here — a huge, vibrant underground scene that feels like it’s bubbling up from every corner: from the alleys, the collectives, the hybrid venues, the rooftops, the basements.

I believe what makes this possible is the unique sense of freedom and letting go that hangs in the air. Marseille has a special way of boosting creativity and imagination. It’s this rare mix — a raw and authentic underground culture intertwined with incredibly accessible nature.

It’s also one of the only major cities in France where you can literally swim in the sea right in the city center — and honestly, that changes everything.

From forward-thinking restaurants and laid-back vinyl shops to independent collectives that give the city its pulse, Marseille lives and breathes differently. You can see it, hear it, feel it. So here’s my personal guide — a little panorama of favorite spots, musical gems, inspiring spaces, and local vibes. Hope you enjoy the ride :)’

La Murisserie

Probably the coolest thing to happen to Marseille in recent years.

A creative hub that mixes live music, a stylish restaurant, a recording studio, and a coworking space — all run by people who genuinely love sound and support emerging culture in all its forms. It’s hands down the best place to start your Marseille journey. Incredible cocktails, delicious food, and welcoming vibes. The studio upstairs is so cool to rent and work on your best demos all night long.

Le Chapiteau

Marseille’s very own version of Sisyphos. An open-air dancefloor, solid lineups featuring local collectives and European guests, a laid-back and festive atmosphere. You can dance under the stars, dive into the mini club, or enjoy a more intimate moment in the little wooden hut. Great sound, friendly people, and pure good times.

Holy Melt

Honestly, the best sandwiches and burgers I’ve had in France. A bit out of the way, but totally worth the trip — or the delivery. The Chicken Melt is insane, and the blue cheese burger with English stilton is unforgettable. High-end junk food, best enjoyed late at night.

Limmat

A humble but brilliant spot near Cours Julien. Mediterranean cuisine without the fuss, just real flavors and seasonal dishes, paired with one of the best natural wine selections in town. Grab a seat on the iconic stairs of the neighborhood — simple, tasty, and atmospheric.

Longchamp Palace

Ideal for a drink at sunset or a bistro-style dinner. Classic French dishes get a fresh twist here, and everything is flavorful and generous. Great for group dinners too — the patio can host large tables.

Île du Frioul

The ultimate nature-meets-sea escape. A short ferry ride from the Old Port takes you to a tiny island paradise. Perfect for hiking, swimming, or sharing a laid-back meal by the water. A must-do.

Dizonor Marseille

The city’s best record store. A sharp yet welcoming selection of new releases and second-hand gems. The vibe is chill, the listening stations are always spinning something good, and you’ll likely stay longer than planned.

Trattoria Partenope

Arguably the best Neapolitan pizzeria in France. Fresh pasta, wood-fired pizza, and a warm, lively atmosphere. Come for the food, stay for the limoncello and the southern Italian spirit.

Chez Gilda

A no-frills seafood spot near La Plaine. Super fresh shellfish, offal cooked like nowhere else, and great wine — all served with that unmistakable Marseille flair.

La Plaine (Place Jean Jaurès)

This is Marseille at its most raw and authentic — and also its coolest. All the best local bars are here, and the vibe is unmatched. Grab a pastis in the afternoon or settle in for a meal at Bistrot Peinard, one of the tastiest (and most affordable) spots in the area.

La Boule du Carly

My favorite hangout. Probably the best pétanque spot in town. Grab a drink, gather some friends, and throw a few boules as the sun goes down. Effortless Marseille charm.

Frisch Kebap

The best kebab in town !!!! with its cool terrace you can eat amazing grilled veal kebap. come earlier ;)
