Nightclubber chat to Pacific Coliseum

SlothBoogie have been huge fans of Pacific Coliseum for a long time, so they’re very proud to present an EP with him and who better to introduce the release than the man from Vancouver himself... 'After four years, it feels amazing to return to my Pacific Coliseum project with the Breeze FM EP. This record came together in a really beautiful, collaborative way, between myself and the SlothBoogie crew. I sent over a handful of demos, and together we compiled and developed this record, which feels both fresh and true to the sound of my previous releases. I wanted to have the record bounce around a bit in terms of tempos and feels: Wine Host has a nice sunset, downtempo feel; Breeze FM taps into a deeper, jazzier sound; Feel Free is a peak time Italo jam. Something for everyone! The whole thing is rounded off with Tech Support’s remix of Feel Free, which re-imagines the tune as an electro stomper. I’ve got a lot planned for this project in the year to come, and this feels like the perfect way to reintroduce myself to people.'
Off the back of his hiatus, here at nightclubber.ro we thought it’s be a good idea to catch up with the man himself to talk about the long awaited release plus more…

Hey Pacific Coliseum , Great to meet you! What's happening in your world at the minute?
Hi! I’m currently in a coffee shop in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. After an exceptionally hot weekend, it’s a welcome gray morning. I’m listening to Macca on NTS, enjoying a pourover, hoping none of my friends come in, so I can get some work done.
Congratulations on releasing 'Breeze FM EP' on SlothBoogie. Talk us through the release?
Thank you so much! Everything was sparked by an email I got from Patrick, from the SlothBoogie crew. I had sent him some new music I was putting out under my other alias, and he asked if I would be interested in releasing something with them as Pacific Coliseum! My last release as Pacific Coliseum was all the way back in 2020, and it just felt like the right time to flex that muscle again. I started compiling some tracks that I had lying around, and a few newer demos, and over the course of six weeks or so, we dialled in the EP!
Can you enlighten us on the meaning of your artist name?
Pacific Coliseum is a combination of words that means something very specific to folks from the Vancouver, BC area, and it’s hopefully evocative for people outside of that area.
What inspired you to embark on this journey with Music?
Growing up listening to music on the radio, and hearing dance music play in hockey arenas when the home team scored.
Can you describe the connection between your music and your Canadian roots, and how they continue to influence your music today?
I was born in the 80s, which means I really came of age in the 90s. That means I watched a lot of MuchMusic (our Canadian equivalent to MTV) growing up, and lucky for me, that meant I was exposed to a lot of different kinds of exciting music. It also means that I was exposed to a lot of Canadian music! The Canadian government requires broadcasters to play a certain amount of Canadian music, so whether you like it or not, you’re gonna hear a lot of it. And of course, that’s bound to influence you!
What has been the highlight of your career so far? Can you talk about a specific moment or accomplishment that stands out as particularly meaningful to you?
I recently had one of my favourite touring DJs play out an unreleased tune of mine at his party in Vancouver, in my favourite club of the city. What a feeling!
Can you share some insight into your creative process when producing music? Do you have any particular rituals or methods that help you stay inspired?
I like to light some palo santo, pull up some grainy VHS clips of clubs in Ibiza in the 80s, with the sound on mute, pour myself an ice cold glass of Peach-Pear La Croix, and let the magic happen.
As someone deeply rooted in the electronic music scene, what state is it in right now? What notable artists are emerging?
Based off my Instagram Stories on Sunday mornings, I’d say it’s in a very lovely state, and everything seems to be going great! All the DJs I follow are playing beautiful parties with a lot of very happy people!
As for some emerging artists, here’s a few producers and DJs that I’ve been really enjoying lately: Jex Opolis, Manuel Darquart, Make A Dance, Moxie, Alex Kassian, Heels & Souls, Ariane V, Wallace, Paula Tape, just to name a few.
When you are not busy with music, what might we find you doing?
Going for runs, sending emails, drinking water, and playing soccer with my Two Young Sons.
What's next for you after ‘Breeze FM EP'’? Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or collaborations you have in the works? Are there any new directions or sounds you're exploring in your music right now?
I have a lot of new music lined up for the upcoming 12 months, but I’m going to be hush about it until everything has been announced. Let’s just say, I’m not going to wait another 4 years before I put something new out again. As for the direction or sound, everything is getting much more geared for the Dance Floor. The next record has some mellower bits, but for the most part this is Music To Dance To!
Finally, Which are the three records that you’ve been putting in your bag recently without hesitating?
Alex Kassian - E2-E4 (A Reference to E2–E4 By Manuel Göttsching)
100th Monkey - Raindance / Nyika Nyika
Discotecas - 003
