Vakula releases 'Times' on Oath

Vakula has always existed in a space beyond easy categorisation. Across a discography that stretches through deep house, dub techno, ambient abstraction and psychedelic jazz inflections, the Ukrainian producer has consistently treated electronic music less as a fixed framework and more as a living, breathing organism. His latest EP for Oath, Times, continues that philosophy with remarkable elegance, a four-track journey that feels fluid, introspective and deeply human.

From the opening moments of “Atmos Time”, Vakula establishes the EP’s emotional terrain with a patience that immediately draws the listener inward. Soft melodic chimes hover above spacious grooves while percussion slowly materialises through the haze, allowing the track to unfold organically rather than forcing momentum. It’s immersive music in the truest sense: rich in detail, hypnotic in motion and completely unconcerned with immediacy. Instead, Vakula invites you to drift through it.

“Break Time” subtly increases the pulse without abandoning the dreamlike atmosphere that defines the record. Broken rhythms shuffle beneath glowing pads and celestial arpeggios, creating a tension between movement and suspension. There’s a moment midway through where the track seems to collapse inward before rebuilding itself from fragments of melody and rhythm, a reminder of Vakula’s instinctive approach to arrangement and his ability to make electronic compositions feel almost improvisational.

On the B-side, “Drum Time” arguably delivers the EP’s emotional peak. Jungle-leaning broken beats intertwine with looping harmonic motifs and shimmering melodic phrases, balancing rhythmic complexity with warmth and restraint. The track never pushes too hard, yet its groove remains magnetic throughout. Vakula’s understanding of space is especially striking here; every element breathes naturally, allowing the hypnotic flow to develop with understated confidence.

Closing piece “Soul Time” descends into a beautifully weightless ambient techno landscape. Dreamlike textures, washed-out vocal snippets and submerged keys drift across laid-back percussion, dissolving the EP into something almost meditative. It’s a fitting conclusion to a record built around atmosphere, memory and gradual transformation.

What makes Times so compelling is Vakula’s refusal to conform to linear club functionality. While rhythm remains central, these tracks operate more like evolving environments than straightforward dancefloor tools. The EP rewards attentive listening just as much as late-night dancefloor immersion, existing somewhere between introspection and motion.

In an era where so much electronic music feels engineered for instant impact, Times stands apart through subtlety, depth and emotional sincerity. Vakula continues to prove that his greatest strength lies not simply in blending genres, but in dissolving their boundaries altogether.
