Filippo MSM: Influences

Filippo MSM is the alias of Filippo Rocco, a London-based, Italian born DJ/producer known for his work as ½ of Metropolitan Soul Museum (Rawax, Public Release) and more recently on the multi-format and multi-genre label, Kulture Galerie. Already earning kudos in influential circles, the label recently released its second VA record including the likes of John Beltran, Bohm and De Licting’s RDS and Nathan Kofi. More recently he introduced the very first single EP on KG’s digital label, courtesy of natebytheway, whose Witless Q&A EP offered a fascinating snapshot into what’s to come. With the likes of Tommy Vicari Jr, Doc Sleep, Rambal Cochet and Duncant Thomas to come, it’s safe to say it’s a label going places. And aside from the music, we’re really impressed by the overall aesthetic and graphic design. A man of many influences, we checked in with Filippo recently, as he talked us through some of the artists who’ve impacted - and continue to impact - his musical make-up…

“I have decided to look at these 'influences' based on what I am doing with the label.”

“I am dividing the vinyl VAs from the digital label based on sound and genres. I want the vinyl releases to be standing out in their own right, like selecting a series of artists for an art exhibition (in my Kulture Galerie). Each VA has a sonic theme and I am hoping some of the below tracks helps describing where my influences come from”.

Omar S

“First up is Omar S. I picked his track, ‘Day’ as I feel it neatly describes one of the next releases coming on Kulture Galerie. The VA will have a couple of super summery tracks with samples and groovy dusty machines, and a deep and melodic cut which are all elements of Omar S' sound. A great inspiration to me!”

Aphex Twin

“‘Alberto Balsam’ by the one and only Aphex Twin has got to be on this list. The sad and melancholic melodies alongside this wonderful down tempo groove is part of what has inspired me into starting a new series, coming soon on the label but not announced yet. Plenty of IDM, electro and weird stuff to follow though!”

Eris Drew

“‘Trans Love Vibration’ by Eris Drew is another super inspiring piece of modern music, one that has driven me into releasing some cuts like the Gene Tellem Nervous Planet as well as Alien D's Heavy Cream but in general that mixes a sweet and warm feeling with a fantastic groove! A true masterpiece!”

Sweely

“I am also super partial to Sweely's music, and this sort of sound and vibe is what I am trying to achieve with the digital outlet of the label. Single EPs and some VAs, mostly new artists but with a predisposition to delivering groovy dance floor killers with an edge. My man natebytheway and his 'Witless Q&A' EP are the first of many!”

Call Super

“Finally, this belter by Call Super. Their music is so different and this one particularly inspires me all the time to not set boundaries with the music I am releasing but to continue and find beauty in different stuff!”
