It's been a while since we've spoken to Max and as he's someone with his finger fimrly on the deep house pulse we thought we'd ask him for a run down of his favourite jams of 2024...
Rob Redford - MPC Soul
Massive fan of Rob’s sound and this offering from the summer on Local Talk is up there with my favourites of his. Lovely chopped samples with a wicked groove and chords ensures that this will be in my box for a long time to come.
Toronto Hustle & Sean Roman - Not Now, Not Ever (Kai Alcé Remix)
This whole ep is a beaut but I can’t get enough of this track in particular. Signature Kai Alcè remix that reworks the vocals while adding lovely stabs and chords with probably my favourite bassline of the year. Another gem from Wolf Music.
Ralph Session - You Are Here
I love the simmering tension on this one, really keeps you locked in. Great use of the vocal sample which adds to the energy and just overall very well produced track. Really enjoy playing this one out
Rami - Walk (JT Donaldson Remix)
Proper, groovy, sexy deep house here from over the pond. Been a fan of JT for years, and this latest offering ticks all the boxes as to why. Perfect track to get the dancefloor warmed up.
2fox Ft Liam Bailey & BB James - So Long (Manoo Remix)
A special one for me for a few reasons. the original is one of our tracks we make under our 2fox moniker. I have been a huge Manoo fan for years and years so for him to not only remix our track, but to create this beautiful piece really was a massive deal. As a bonus, it came out on Soul Quest and reached #1 on Traxsource Soulful House chart, so a win all round!
Makèz - Closer Ft AVA LAV
One from earlier in the year that was a staple in my set for a good few months and also on my Spotify rotation in the car. Makèz showing their never ending versatility once again. I love everything about it, AVA’s vocals are perfect, the chords are nice and warm, the snare hits just right and I love the fact they’ve only made it less then 3 mins long so you just end up having it on repeat.
Bob Bonidas - Space Animals
I’m gonna be honest, I could do a whole top 20 with only tracks on Bobby Donny Ace Series. The output and consistency of Frtis Wentink and his million alias’s on his brilliant label is second to none. This one sums up the slightly wonky, raw sound of the labels take on deep house. One of those labels that I buy blindly on sight as soon as there’s a new release. You just know that it will be worth it!
Broki - Es Que Lo Es (Kay Suzuki Remix)
Ok, this one’s a bit of a cheat as it was originally released in 2008, but it had a repress this year as part of a Kay Suzuki remix ep with choice tracks ranging from 2008-2022.This still sounds as fresh today as it ever did, Kay Suzukis percussion, drums and chords complimenting the vocals perfectly while that simple but effective basslines does just what it needs to do.
Frits Wentink - Idle Dancer
Frits once again, but this time under his main alias. The whole ep is brilliant. All 4 tracks can fit in to a set but this one edges it for me. All the elements are there, and that vocal sample on its own is sure to make this a classic for years to come. Frits and Wolf music showing why as an artist and label, they’re at the top of their respective games.
The Mole - Climbers Pit Ft Joli B & Danuel Tate
This is the type of deep, disco, jazzy hybrid that sits in its own lane. Another one with great simmering tension. Love the trippy vocal samples and the weird and wonderful synth sounds. And the drums and the bassline tie it all in really well. A great one to drop at the right time with the right crowd.
