Rewind: Barac presents Nightclubber 102
Nightclubber 102, even amongst the many great mixes we’ve hosted over the years, really is a special one. It comes at us courtesy of Barac, the Bucharest-based DJ and producer - and a man who’s long been at the forefront of Romania’s minimal house and techno scenes.
Known for his melodic and textured approach, Barac is someone who helped redefine what was once called "the Romanian sound," a style rooted in rolling grooves and deep basslines. His evolution from functional dancefloor tracks to more emotional and atmospheric productions has earned him recognition from key figures like compatriots such as Raresh and Rhadoo, but also legions of others such as Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and more.
Refreshingly, Barac still prioritizes a quantity over quality approach to his musical output. His last release came at us courtesy of Davide Zambette and Albi’s Yecad label, and the Hypnotic Grayscale EP is proof indeed that he’s lost none of his zest for magical productions.
Anyhow, back to Nightclubber 102 for a moment. On this mix, Barac leans on a serious of melodic and percussive cuts. Moments of light flicker in and out, and there’s a genuine feeling of emotion that really leaves an impression around the ¾ mark. As ever with Barac, the track selection is one that rewards the true trainspotters: though it’s full of captivating gems, you won’t find a tracklisting associated with this one. But if you sit back, throw on your headphones and grab a cup of coffee and select play on this mix, we can assure you that you won’t be left disappointed. Brilliant stuff from a true Bucharest original.
