Short Attention Records Marks 50th Mix With a Teenage Tape From Omar S

For its 50th Mix Series release and 10th year in operation, Mexican label Short Attention Records goes back to the source with a rare recording from one of Detroit’s most iconic artists, Omar S.

The recording isn’t a new mix. It’s a tape from Omar’s teenage years, a document of the sounds that were already moving through his world long before FXHE Records, long before international recognition, and long before anyone was trying to put a name on what he was doing.

Recorded on a Yamaha MD4 and then transferred to VCR tape, the mix moves through early house influences, Chicago classics and Detroit sounds. Raw, unpolished and deeply personal, it offers a glimpse into the musical foundation behind Omar S’s stripped-down, uncompromising approach to house and techno.

Short Attention’s connection with Omar and FXHE came together during a visit to Detroit in 2026, when founders Hector Ram and Ricky Ramirez met Omar at his record store and party. For the two Juárez-based heads, the encounter connected their own corner of the underground with a city that has been a constant reference point for the label since its beginnings.

Founded in 2016 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Short Attention has spent the last decade pushing a classic underground house and techno vibe rooted in Chicago and Detroit. The label has released music on vinyl and digitally, while its Mix Series has become its own kind of archive, bringing together DJs and producers from across the underground on physical CDs.

And physical is important. In an era when a mix can disappear into a streaming platform, Short Attention still makes CDs by hand and gives them away. The CDs are produced specifically for free distribution, with the aim of helping music culture grow, preserving the importance of experiencing music in a physical format, and giving each individual copy a value of its own. They are made to be shared and experienced rather than treated simply as another commercial release.

Copies have travelled through record stores and scenes in Detroit, Chicago, Amsterdam, New York, Pittsburgh, Marseille, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Berlin and beyond. The CDs are free for customers of the stores that receive them, continuing Short Attention’s approach of putting physical music directly into the hands of listeners.

CDs are free for customers

For the 50th edition, Short Attention has pressed a special anniversary version of the series, centered entirely around Omar S’s teenage recording. These copies will be exclusively available through Omar S’s store with the purchase of FXHE products, giving the release a direct connection to the Detroit artist and his label. As with the rest of the Mix Series, the CD itself is free; it is intended as a physical document of the recording and a way of keeping the culture around music, collecting and listening alive.

Ten years of Short Attention. Fifty mixes. One old tape from Detroit.

Sometimes the best way forward is to rewind.
